“Let us boldly become citizens of the digital world.”
Pope Francis Jan ’14
Pope Francis emphatically encourages the Church to embrace the digital era.
In a recent message for the 48th World Communications Day, the Pope’s directives were passionate and definitive as he addressed the Church’s need to be present in today’s world of communication. “The revolution taking place in communications media and information technologies represents a great and thrilling challenge; may we respond to that challenge with fresh energy and imagination as we seek to share with others the beauty of God.”

SDI-Apps Wins Prestigious Honor from the City of Albuquerque for Developing Unique City-Focused Mobile App
All things Albuquerque Lend Mass Appeal to this Broad Spectrum Use Mobile App
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – March 20, 2013 – SDI-Apps, an Albuquerque-based mobile app development company, is the recent winner of a city-wide contest to develop free apps from open data for the City of Albuquerque. City of Albuquerque Mayor, Richard J. Berry presented SDI-Apps with a check and the distinct honor of being one of three local app developers chosen as the contest winners.
The contest was officially announced by Mayor Berry in April 2012 when suggestions from the general public yielded three contest categories, cultural resources, business in the city and outdoor fun and healthy living. Two other categories were added later and included most innovative and educational.
From the fifteen submissions received, SDI-Apps was chosen as the winner in the Most Innovative category with the entry, Doing Business in the City. Founder Sue Jiron along with lead developer, Patrice Vigil and director of IT, Joanna Salinas were on-hand to receive the award and check. “We wanted to build something that would have mass appeal,” said Jiron. “We decided to build the mother of all apps and use all available data. We ended up using 11 data sets, which resulted in the creation of an app with 24 different uses,” she said.
There are currently over one million apps available from Apple and the Android market is expected to reach one million apps by June 2013. Cities that want to be at the forefront of the technology wave will be adopting apps for a variety of reasons from providing information about city services to tourism related functions like locating bus routes and locating cultural venues. Cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle already have city apps.
“The app we developed for the City of Albuquerque really is a one-stop-shop for accessing city information from a mobile device,” Jiron said. “In addition to accessing the latest news and events, users can access the Where’s My Bus app, travelers can check arrival and departure info and there is even a public safety tab that provides complete mapping of all police, fire stations and hospitals in the Metro area.”
